Friday, September 28, 2012 Preparing to install the interim shelving, I removed the masking tape from yesterday's painting inside the port lower and starboard upper lockers. |
The port shelving was ready to install, so I screwed the four shelves into position. I made up four solid cherry fiddles to fit, applied sealer varnish, and, later, installed them on the front edges of the shelves with glue and stainless brads to hold them while the glue cured. |
I templated the two spaces in the starboard upper cabinet that needed shelves, then made the shelves from 1/2" cherry plywood. In this instance, I brought the shelves out nearly to the face of the cabinet, rather than keeping them offset, since the nature of the space made this approach more useful and logical. I banded the exposed edge of the plywood with solid cherry, prefinished the shelves, and installed them. |
Next, I installed the main panels for both the port lower and starboard upper lockers, using glue and screws. |
It seemed a perfect opportunity to take care of the rest of the beadboard bunging. While I'd incrementally installed bungs on the port bulkheads as I constructed the cabinetry, the large forward bulkhead remained largely unbunged. So I bored out all the screw holes, then installed bungs; I also bunged the screw holes in the new settee locker cabinetry as needed. |
Finally, I prepared ahead and masked off the borders of the port upper locker dividers, and applied my tie coat of primer so I could paint those areas next time. |
