Mae | Friday, May 15, 2009 After a meeting where we discussed budget and priorities, I spent the day on preliminaries and planning in an attempt to determine not only what really needed to be done, but what would be possible to do given the various constraints of the proposed project. With safety of the boat a top priority for this phase of the job, along with exterior cosmetics and making the boat weathertight once more, I made the rounds of the boat to inspect the various through hulls, hoses, and running gear in an attempt to determine their condition and what needed to be addressed. Here are the results of the inspection. |
Cockpit scuppers: hoses are cracked and require replacement. The fiberglass tubes in the hull and "trees" beneath the cockpit (which conjoin the two sidedeck drains with the cockpit well scuppers) appear sound, so far at least. Top: port hose; Bottom: starboard hose. |
Side deck/cockpit seat drains: These hoses require replacement, as there are cuts, repairs made with duct tape, and general unsuitability. Left: port hoses; right: starboard hoses. |
Stuffing box hose: This hose should be replaced, and the packing replaced as well. The shaft coupling is badly corroded and will be extremely challenging to remove from the shaft, and could lead to a requirement to replace all components. |
Galley sink drain: hose appears fair, but replacement would be best |
Engine intake: Old gate valve and fiberglass tube should be replaced with modern seacock and through hull fitting |
Head intake/discharge: original barrel-type seacocks in working order and can remain as is; standard maintenance and lubrication recommended. |
Engine fuel system: nonexistent, with old tank removed. Old fuel lines and related should be replaced in entirety. |
Cutless bearing: worn and loose. Replacement suggested in conjunction with other shaft and packing maintenance Propeller: reconditioning or replacement suggested, but not required |
Universal Atomic 4 and wiring: Not addressed for now. Some upgrades, work, and/or prayers likely required. |
