Saturday, May 31, 2008 This morning, I continued work on the cabin top beams. Using the same process I described the other day, I cut and fit the remaining three beams and notches. |
I made marks 2" in from each end of each beam to use for future reference in routing a detail on the bottom edges of the beams, and then removed the beams for future milling, sanding, and installation at a later date. For now, I planned to leave the overhead off until I completed a few more tasks on the interior, as work was much easier within the cabin without the confines of the beams and top. With plans for another coat of varnish late in the day, I took a moment now and sanded all the brightwork again to prepare for that new coat. I also sanded the forward cabin bulkhead so I could apply a coat of the white semi-gloss paint later in the day as well. Later, I cut and fit the v-berth fiddle pieces, made from solid cherry that I'd milled and sanded earlier. Each piece required miter cuts at one or both ends to accommodate the angles involved. I installed the fiddles with countersunk screws and glue; later, I'd bung the screw holes. At the angled joint between the two longitudinal pieces, I added a clamp to help hold the pieces in the proper orientation to each other until the glue set. |
I wrapped up the day's work with another coat of paint and varnish as applicable. This made four coats of varnish on most of the exterior wood (2 on the cockpit seat supports). |
