Waanderlust Project--Phase III |

2011 I began the day by unscrewing the port toerail, a quick process. As needed, I reinstalled various control lines to hold the now-loose rail in a convenient position. With the rail completely detached, I milled small countersinks at each screw location in the deck, then cleaned the mating surfaces vacuumed up any wood chips and debris. |
After applying heavy beads of teak-brown sealant to the forward portion of the deck, I reattached the toerail, permanently this time. Working my way aft, applying sealant and securing portions of the rail, I completed the reinstallation in short order. In about one hour, I removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the rail with sealant, but it then took about two hours to clean up the excess sealant. |
I moved my operations over to the starboard side, and repeated the process with the starboard toerail. As before, I held the rail in place with various control lines to pre-bend it so I could get the forward end installed properly, and in this manner I worked aft, drilling holes and securing the rail with screws along the way. |
With that complete, I removed the starboard rail, cleaned and vacuumed, and then reinstalled it with sealant before cleaning up the excess sealant. |
I cut some of the excess length off the aft ends of the rails, mainly to provide easier access on the staging, but left an overhang pending design and construction of the taffrail. |
To wrap up work for the day, and position myself well for next week, I varnished the interior trim bits I'd been working on, leading up to final installation next week. |
