Waanderlust Project--Phase III | Tuesday, September 6, 2011

First on the agenda was to install (such as it was) the small cooler beneath the starboard galley.  Earlier, I'd purchased a basic 28 qt. cooler that I'd determined would fit nicely in the available space.

After some layout on the countertop, to roughly locate the cooler beneath, I cut an opening in the counter and installed support cleats all around.

After determining the height clearance required for the cooler, I marked for and milled a series of cleats that I installed inside the locker to support a shelf.  I decided to install a full shelf at this level, which took less effort to conceive than a partial shelf just to support the cooler; plus, the shelf made the locker potentially more handy.

Placing the cooler directly beneath the new counter top opening, I made a few reference marks, then removed the shelf and installed a 3" high band around the cooler footprint to hold the cooler easily and securely.  With the countertop in place, the cooler could be easily accessed or removed through the hatch in the counter.

Next, to get some of the clutter off the shop floor, and because there was really no reason not to, I installed the hinged section of the port settee (designed, according to documentation fro previous owners, to offer flat chart stowage beneath), as well as the pilot berth platform.  Then, I installed the drawers on that side.  It was nice to see things starting to come back together.

Later, I sanded and cleaned the primer on the galley cabinetry, then applied the first coat of semi-gloss white enamel.

Next on my list was to mock up and mill the final section of the teak eyebrow.  The profile was fairly straightforward, so after a few measurements and cuts on some scrap lumber, I created a section that matched the remainder as closely as possible.

I milled 8/4 teak into two blanks of the appropriate dimensions, then rounded the corners as needed to match the desired profile.  I sanded the pieces smooth and trimmed the forward ends to match the ends of the existing eyebrow before setting the trim aside for the moment, as I'd reached the end of the day's available time.
