Snow Lily | Monday, January 28, 2013 Now that the epoxy plugs on the coachroof were ready, I continued with the handrail installation. To begin, I had to dry-fit the rails once more, so I could drill and tap the fastener holes in the correct positions through the deck. After removing the rails from the dry-fit on one side, I milled small countersinks in the deck at each location and, after cleaning up, installed the rails permanently in bed of sealant, using 1/4-20 bolts inserted into the tapped holes, then secured from below with fender washers and nuts. |
Afterwards, I repeated the process with the starboard rail. |
With both rails installed, I cleaned up the excess sealant from the outside, leaving the masking tape in place on deck for the upcoming varnish work on the rails. Inside, I cut off the excess bolt lengths so the overhead would fit, and to improve the appearance of the bolts exposed in the forward section of the boat. Finally, I bunged the screw holes in the rails. |
I spent the bulk of the day installing the ceiling in the forward cabin, and completed the installation. The overhead liner ended a few inches short of the edge of the deck, leaving a gap there that would require trim to span between the liner and the top ceiling board, which I'd prepare later. |
