Tuesday, March 13, 2012 Preparing to install core on the starboard after sidedeck, I sanded away the paint in the surrounding areas, as I'd done elsewhere, and made other final preparations as needed. |
After cleaning up, I laid out and cut pieces of core to fit the area. |
Then, I wet out and installed the core in epoxy adhesive, following the same processes as in earlier areas. |
I'd planned it so I could continue working on the port side while the starboard side was under construction, and to that end spent most of the remainder of the day sanding. I sanded the newly-cored port after sidedeck to remove excess resin and so forth, as usual. The core here ended up a bit lower than the surrounding deck edges, particularly alongside the cockpit, so I planned to add an additional layer of fiberglass to help make up the difference. |
Next, I sanded the newly-fiberglassed port forward sidedeck, bringing the edges flush with the adjacent deck and lightly scuffing other areas to prepare for the next steps. |
There was an island of several feet of sidedeck still coated with the 1,323 layers of old nonskid paint located between these two repairs, and this was a good time to take care of that area, along with stripping all the paint and gelcoat to bare laminate along the gunwale. |
Later, I cleaned up and applied the first coat of fairing compound to the port forward sidedeck. |
Finally, I installed two layers of fiberglass to the small area of the poop deck that I'd opened up and prepared earlier. |
