Kaholee Refit | January 5, 2007 I'm not quite sure where this day went, though it evaporated rapidly. I do know that apparently little of it was actually spent working directly on Kaholee. I finished up the worst of the grinding inside the boat today, but before I could begin I had to clean up. That seems counterproductive, but during earlier grinding steps I had swept dust and other debris down into the bilge, and now I needed to clean it out so that I could grind down there. Once that was done, I set to work with the grinder again. As seems typical in some of the old Pearsons, I pulled gobs of cured, unreinforced resin out of the bilge beneath the engine and shaft log; the material pulled away from the hull with ease. Then, I ground wherever I could reach, and wherever the sander would fit. With the bilges sanded, I moved on to whatever accessible lockers there were, including beneath the settees in the saloon, and some areas of the forward cabin. I sanded the painted fiberglass cabin sole as well, though this will eventually be covered with teak strips. I also removed some tabbing in the v-berth that, while fairly recently installed, simply had not bonded to the plywood and needed to be redone. I was able to pull most of it away by hand. Finally, I sanded the head compartment. The paint on the overhead was in better condition than that which I had encountered elsewhere, and I found that it didn't need to be completely removed. Earlier, I had removed what remained of a locker behind the head platform, since that area was slated for a new holding tank during this refit. I sanded the inside of the hull in this area as well. After a thorough cleaning of the boat and shop first of next week, I'll be ready to move on to the required hole patching and filling stage of the project. Total Time on This Job Today: 2.5 Hours |
