Circe
| Saturday, March 27, 2010 The top of the engine box, while more or less complete, still required trim to cover the exposed plywood edge on the forward and starboard sides. I discovered that some excess lengths of trim that I'd made earlier for the head and galley actually would work well on the engine box, so I cut two pieces to fit as necessary, mitering them in the corner. I secured the trim to the top with glue and clamps; later, after the glue dried, I applied the first coat of varnish to the new trim. I also varnished again the anchor platform, and a handgrip for the companionway hatch. |
To complete the icebox, the lid required some insulation on its lower side. Earlier, I'd installed a gasket around the inside of the hatch opening as well. For the insulation, I cut a block of insulation foam to fit, beveled the lower edge, and, with the foam on a piece of plastic (not on the hatch), I installed a layer of lightweight fiberglass over the foam to seal it. Later, I'd glue the completed foam/fiberglass block to the hatch in the appropriate position and paint it. |
