Waanderlust Project--Phase III | Wednesday, September 21, 2011

I removed the numerous clamps from the toerail, and spent sometime sanding and cleaning up the glued scarf joints, eventually sanding the areas through 220 grit to match the toerail body.  I was pleased with how the joints came out; I actually had trouble seeing the seams as I was sanding, which I took to be a good sign.

After sanding, I cleaned up the rails and the shop floor around them to remove dust and debris, then solvent-washed both rails to prepare for a sealer coat of varnish, which I applied next.

Continuing with the eyebrow trim, I once more sanded and varnished the trim.

I performed a few milling operations on the new corner trim blank I'd recently glued together, creating a rounded corner and rounded edges, and sanding the trim smooth.  Then, I used the table saw to remove the center section (on the back side) in order to reduce the thickness of the trim to about 1/4".

With the milling complete, I cleaned the wood and applied a sealer coat of varnish, and revarnished all the other trim pieces I'd begun yesterday.

A length of 2" hose and some other items I needed arrived, several days later than I'd anticipated, but since I was anxious to complete the engine work for now I went right ahead and installed 3/4" hose and a siphon break for the engine exhaust riser, locating the siphon valve as high as I could within the port cockpit locker.

Then, I completed the 2" exhaust hose run, through a fiberglass waterlift muffler that I secured near the engine and leading the hose through a high look inside the lazarette before terminating it at the through hull fitting I'd installed a few weeks earlier.

All that remained to complete the engine installation was electrical wiring, but that, along with the other vessel wiring, would occur during one final work session leading up to launching in the spring.
