Waanderlust Project--Phase III | Thursday, September 15, 2011

I spent most of the day working on the countertops. With shop visitors in the morning, and an unplanned errand in the afternoon, the time available was shorter than I'd planned.

To begin, I located and cut a hole for the sink in the port countertop towards the aft end, leaving a workspace forward for a portable stove or other galley chores.

Next, I cut white high-pressure laminate to fit each of the two main countertop sections.  In both cases, I cut the laminate dry, holding it in place with clamps, since I planned to screw the countertops in place and therefore would install the laminate afterwards.   I also glued laminate to the starboard countertop hatch (above the icebox) and the top of the engine box, as these small pieces could be completed on the bench.  It seems I failed to take photos of the smaller pieces.

With the laminate cut to shape, I installed the two plywood countertops in their respective places (after first installing the intermediate shelf on the port side), securing them with bronze screws.  Then, after checking to ensure the pre-cut laminate would fit properly, I applied contact cement to both surfaces and installed the laminate, rolling it down securely.

After protecting the countertop with tape, I installed the sink in a bed of sealant, holding it securely with the attached studs, nuts, and washers. I installed a simple telescoping faucet at the head of the sink above the drain, and connected a supply hose from the faucet to the nearby foot pump; then I installed the sink drain hose to the new through hull in the locker.

Finally, I painted out the small remaining area in the port galley locker, which I'd left unpainted so I could install the seacock and its backing plate.  With that complete, I could finish the paint.
