Waanderlust Project--Phase III |

2011 Along with a few odds and ends, I spent most of the day working on various interior woodwork, beginning with the cabinetry in the saloon, which I sanded and varnished, this time with satin varnish. |
I pulled out the various drawers and locker covers for the main saloon and prepared to refinish them as needed. Originally, I'd planned to strip these to bare wood, but most of the drawers were covered with very fragile veneer that wouldn't survive the stripping and sanding process. So since these items were in generally fair condition, I decided instead to simply sand them lightly and add coats of varnish as needed to match the other interior woodwork. |
After sanding the varnished surfaces with 220 grit, I set the drawers aside for later varnishing. The drawer fronts' veneer wouldn't survive much more than this, but hopefully would look pretty good when refinished to match the other interior brightwork. I also made a couple small repairs to some damaged edge trim. |
A solid wood fold-down backrest/bunkboard for the port pilotberth was made from a single piece of solid mahogany, so this I stripped to bare wood and sanded smooth for varnish. |
Also close at hand was the wooden sliding companionway hatch, so I stripped the remaining varnish and most of the paint over the plywood field insert, and sanded it smooth to prepare for refinishing. |
