Friday, March 23, 2012 An unanticipated epoxy shortage at the shop, thanks to a shipping snafu at my supplier, meant that I didn't think I had enough epoxy on hand to proceed with my original plan of installing the new core in the cockpit; I'd ordered several days earlier, but the resin didn't arrive with the other items. Though I straightened out the issue, I'd not have my new product till Monday. Refocusing, instead I worked on more sanding. After once more sanding the existing deck patches--foredeck and sidedeck, all of which were now quite close to their final contours, other than minor fine-tuning--I turned to the remaining areas in the cockpit, along the edges where the coamings were installed. This project went more easily than I'd anticipated, which was nice. Sanding off the remnants of the strong polyurethane adhesive wasn't exactly quick, but before too long, and in less time than expected, the job was done, at least everywhere the sander could reach. There were several additional rounds of sanding, including hand and detail sanding, to come later, once I'd completed the major repairs, and as elsewhere I'd finish up the unreachable areas then. |
With the major stripping and surface prep complete, I cleaned up fairly thoroughly, then spent part of the afternoon cutting core to fit the several places required in the cockpit. |

After the core was dry-fit, I used a variety of fiberglass offcuts, leftover from the other deck work, to cut as much of the fiberglass for the cockpit as I could, but didn't have quite enough time to finish up the last pieces, which I'd take care of next time. |
