Snow Lily | Wednesday, June 13, 2012

I spent part of the morning finalizing the initial order for sheet goods and solid hardwood for the interior and some of the exterior trim (specifically toerails).  While there'd probably be additional  material needed later, particularly for exterior trim work, this shipment would jumpstart the interior reconstruction, and seemed a sort of milestone in the project.

Afterwards, I removed the clamps and tape from the cockpit locker lids, and trimmed the excess strips of fiberglass before lightly sanding the new lips.  To finish up the construction, I cut small angled pieces of the same fiberglass and glued them with epoxy at the inboard edges of the hatches, to imitate the general shape of the original hatches.  Later, I applied an epoxy fillet around the inside corners of the new lips in all areas for a smooth transition and added strength.

While awaiting the wood's arrival sometime next week, I planned to work on various smaller jobs to stay busy.  Among these jobs was the sliding companionway hatch, which I'd removed early in the project and had set aside for later attention.  The hatch featured damaged wooden trim and more of the same thick, durable paint on all surfaces that I'd found elsewhere on deck.

After taking note of and documenting the details of the wood trim and sliding mechanism (as it were), I removed the old pieces and set them aside for future reference, and removed the original bronze builder's plate from the aft trim for safekeeping.

Next, I pulled out the various components of the centerboard system, and prepared various orders to replace what needed replacing, such as the cable, fittings, and, eventually, the large bronze lever, which featured a worn-out square hole that needed to be either reconfigured or replaced.

It'd been a while since I'd had need or opportunity to paint any aluminum, but with several spars requiring paint over the summer, including Snow Lily's, I refreshed myself on the processes and available products, which had changed somewhat over the years, and started early preparations for this work in the coming weeks.
