Thursday, August 2, 2012 The second round of filler on the undersides of the sidedecks and cockpit required sanding, so I began with that. This round brought the surfaces close to their final appearance, with only small voids requiring additional filling (these appear as darker red in the photos). |
After cleaning up, I applied additional fairing compound as needed. |

In the forward cabin, I installed the new mini-bulkhead at the aft end of the seat/step. Beginning by epoxy-coating the plywood edge, I then installed the bulkhead in a bed of epoxy adhesive, with more adhesive on the vertical cleats, securing the panel with four screws (their holes later filled with bungs). After forming a smooth fillet at the base of the bulkhead where it met the hull, I applied a layer of fiberglass tabbing to secure it to the hull and provide a rigid structure t0 tie the two sides of the berth together, and also to stand up to its intended duty as a step. To wrap up the installation, I glued in a section of hardwood support cleat across the top edge. |

Finally, I installed three new cherry plywood panels to cover the hanging locker and environs, including the upper shelf and narrow bulkhead just forward. I couldn't clamp the bottom portion of this panel, and with no way to easily brace across the boat I temporarily hot-glued some blocking to the cabin sole and used it to wedge against and press the bottom portion of the panel tightly into position. |
