Circe |
Wednesday, June 17, 2009 With painting going on in the shop, I found myself with the good part of a day to work on Circe. The first order of business was to remove any loose equipment that remained aboard and in her lockers. Working gingerly in the slippery interior, I removed everything that was still aboard, setting aside a smallish pile of equipment to be saved ( some eyeglasses, a masthead Windex, ship's bell, mainsail battens, a couple anchors, and assorted other gear) and tossing the rest into the dumpster, including a case of burst soda cans that had long since emptied their contents into the flooded mixture, greasy old hoses and oil change equipment, and the yacht's faded curtains from the saloon. |
With the boat now cleared out, I donned Grundens and glasses and powerwashed the boat inside and out. The powerwasher did a good job removing the worse of the interior grime and buildup, though everything was so oil-contaminated that all surfaces remained slippery and water-repellant. I made a note to get some industrial degreaser for the next cleaning steps. Powerwashing also removed a good amount of loose and flaking paint from many of the surfaces, which I hosed into the bilge and under settee lockers for later cleanup during a subsequent cleaning party. For the moment, though, I left things along, and left the boat open for a couple nice days to encourage drying. |
