Ashantee | Wednesday, March 24, 2015 Continuing in the cabin and head, I applied a coat of flat white enamel to the head overhead, and to all the bulkheads other than a portion of the galley that I'd not yet masked off. I also applied a coat of the enamel to the undersides of the three deck hatches. |
To replace the old plastic lenses from the deadlights, I ordered new material and, using the old lenses as templates, I cut out the new 1/4" clear acrylic material to fit the frames. Once I had each piece cut, I trimmed the overmasking material at the edge of the frame, exposing the plastic where it would bond to the inner frames, which featured a recessed area in which the lenses sat. Each of the four frames was essentially identical in nature, so the photos below show only the first frame set for illustrative purposes. |

To streamline installation, I chose to pre-install the lenses in the inside frames. The cast recess would align the lens properly, and all the critical sealing of the deadlight against weather would occur from outside during final installation. I applied a bead of low-tack polyurethane sealant to the inner frame recess, then pressed the new lens into place before weighting it down to hold it securely while the sealant (a light adhesive) cured. I placed the old lenses on top of the new ones to ensure that the weight applied evenly to all areas of the bonding surface while holding the frame flat to the table beneath. |
