Before applying gloss topcoat, it was time to mask off the eventual nonskid areas, both to establish the pattern and to protect them against overspray.  I always looked forward to this task:  perhaps it was because it signaled the end of a long road of sanding, repair, and preparation; or maybe it was the quiet, clean, contemplative, quasi-artistic nature of the job.  In any event, masking the decks was one of my favorite chores.

I set my habitual 1-1/2" border width in most areas, except a few select places where circumstances dictated something wider (for example, the outboard edges of the cockpit, where I left an additional inch to accommodate the thickness of the coamings) or narrower (such as the top surfaces of the Dorade boxes, which were small enough to require a slightly narrower border a the top).  Over the course of the day, I laid out, then masked, then papered, the main deck areas as required, demarking the edges of the gloss paint and the eventual field areas of contrrasting nonskid.
