Waanderlust Project--Phase III | Tuesday, September 13, 2011

To begin, I installed the final pieces of the eyebrow.  For each side, I first milled small countersinks at each screw location, then applied sealant and installed the trim with screws, cleaning up the excess sealant afterwards.  I wrapped up the work by installing bungs at each screw location to hide the screws.

I spent several hours sanding the eight toerail sections smooth to remove saw marks, clean up the wood, and create rounded corners on the top edges.  I worked through several grits on two different tools.

The rail sections were now ready for scarfing and gluing to create the long sections required for each side of the boat.  The 2.5" height of the rails required a scarf joint 20" long to achieve an 8:1 angle, and this steep angle would pose a challenge to cut.  I spent what was left in the day beginning work on a 2-part jig--one section to hold the wood, one to guide the saw--to allow accurate and repetitive cuts for the work ahead, but did not have time to complete the jig, and its ultimate form and function remained a mystery.
